Alex, these videos are awesome!!! I was hoping they came out sooner! Question: I noticed right way the difference between your two examples on this video (especially the pinky). Your pinky barely moved but then on the next warmup exercises your pinky seemed to moved up higher off the frettboard more. Why does it seem the pinky has a mind of it’s own? Still a great lesson!

Hi Tori, thanks for the kind words.. About the question – If you are referring to my right hand pinkie, to be honest I don’t give it too much thought because it hardly ever gets used 🙂 I use it to do things like artificial harmonics but other wise for the most part if you get control of the 4 fingers on your fretting hand and your index and middle on the right hand you’re good to go for a long time 😉

This is really good! I was doing the one-finger-per-fret-chromatic excercise the wrong way. Maybe that’s the reason I was showing little progress. I liked the shifting part too.

    Looking forward for more…

I like this. I’m a guitar player so the plucking technique helped cause I was using the altenating method could have turned into a bad habit!!!

great videos!!! played many years ago and just picked my bass back up to fill in for a player in a local band. Alex’s method of instruction is very helpful to an “old guy” with a tight schedule. Thanks Alex!

been playing 20 years self taught,
never took lessons because when I started I could afford a decent one..
the ones I could afford said they didn’t have anything to teach me
so I gave up on lessons altogether
Just played and learned as I went in many church bands, been on many tours
and played in some huge venues..
finally decided start lessons last week,
after playing with some amazing young players that blew my mind.
you pretty much covered my first hour lesson in this one video…
only in less time and BETTER advice and omg FREE!
    looking forward for more videos-

    Thanx for another great lesson,
but what is the difference between Bass Guitar Secrets.com and SBPS.
Not sure which one to get.

    1. alexsampson Avatar
      alexsampson

Hey Maurice, BGS is angled at a far more theory based approach and doesn’t include any video… SBPS is more up to date, is loaded with video and teaches theory in a far less intimidating way… Grab SBPS 😉

Thanks so much for your basic lesson. Someone has been showing me what to do and I knew it was all wrong but didn’t know why. Now I do. The fingering exercises are wonderful as is the information about your wrists needing to be as straight as possible. Much more comfortable. Thank you.
